Dawne Jenelle's Story
Dawne is originally from Honolulu, “Territory of Hawaii” as (it was not a State until 1959). She grew up in Southern California, going to grade school in Hawthorne. She attended Leuzinger High School where she graduated in 1974.
From there, Dawne attended
El Camino College while working full-time and received her A.S. degree in Art in 1980. A short time later, Dawne moved to Ventura, California and was accepted for admission to Ventura College’s new Respiratory Therapy Program. She graduated from the program in 1982 with an A.S degree in Respiratory Therapy (there was a national exam that followed graduation 😱).
She was hired and worked 12 hour shifts at Community Memorial Hospital as well as Ventura County Medical Center.
Two years after graduation, Dawne returned to Ventura College and enrolled in the evening classes she needed in order to move forward toward finishing her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree.
In early 1990, she was accepted to the Kansas City Art Institute for Fall admission, so she moved to Kansas City, Missouri. In 1993 she was awarded her Bachelor Fine Arts (Ceramics). Her minor study was in Art History with an emphasis on Ceramics. During her last 2 years at KCAI, Dawne worked the night shift as a Respiratory Care Practitioner at a hospital within a mile of the campus.
In the Fall of 1993, Dawne was accepted to Graduate School, at The Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. This meant moving from Missouri to Michigan for 2 years in Graduate School. Yes, there was snow! Again, Dawne continued ...Expand for more
to work as a night shift Respiratory Therapist (which meant working 2 back to back 12 hour shifts every other weekend, but this time at a very busy 500 bed hospital in Southfield, Michigan.
Two years later, in 1995, she received her MFA and was subsequently awarded a Fulbright Scholarship (in Design) which moved her to Helsinki, Finland. During that academic year, she studied Industrial Design at UIAH (now The Alto University of Art, Design and Architecture) and was a visiting artist at Hackman/Arabia.
Dawne returned home to Ventura in the summer of 1996 and went back to work as a night shift Respiratory Care Practitioner. The following year, she found space to set up a clay studio which later moved, in 2010, to The Bell Arts Factory located on Ventura’s Westside.
In 1999, Dawne married the love of her life, Jeff Cushing. Their children have been four legged, adopted felines, first Kofi and then Bootsey & Kobe. All were geriatric, cats with attitudes, that have trained their human parents well.
Dawne continues to be active in the community. She served for 9 years on the City of San Buenaventura’s Public Art Commission. Dawne followed this with 6 years of being on the Community Memorial Hospital Art Advisory Board for the newly built, state of the art hospital, known as The Ocean Tower.
Dawne worked as a Respiratory Care Practitioner until 4 years ago when she retired from the field. Dawne now has more time to continue perfecting her mastery of ceramics She and Jeff are also busy checking off their delayed “Bucket List” items.
